Restoring Your Child’s Digestion – Part 1: Understanding Constipation & the Power of Triphala
“Because healing doesn’t have to be complicated.”
Why Constipation Is More Than Just a Tummy Issue
Constipation is one of the most common struggles parents face today—especially with so many children eating dry, processed, and packaged foods.
This issue is even more pronounced in children with a dysregulated Vata constitution, which in Ayurvedic terms is often seen in children on the autism spectrum or with ADHD.
What Is Vata and Why Does It Matter?
In Ayurveda, Vata governs all movement in the body. This includes:
- Breathing and inhalation
- Swallowing and speech
- Peristalsis (digestive motion)
- Urination and defecation
- Menstruation
- Nervous system activity
When Vata is out of balance, these functions can become dysregulated—leading to issues like constipation, speech delays, sensory sensitivity, and anxiety.
That’s why balancing Vata is often the first step in restoring your child’s health.
Why Not Just Use Laxatives?
If your child is struggling with constipation, you might be tempted to use laxatives to provide quick relief. But here’s the problem:
Laxatives only treat the symptom—not the root cause.
- They irritate the intestinal lining to force bowel movements
- Over time, this weakens the colon’s natural ability to function
- Eventually, stronger laxatives are needed, and constipation becomes chronic
- Laxatives can also dry out the intestines and damage the gut lining
Instead of irritating the gut, we need to strengthen and nourish it.

The Simpler Way: Supporting Natural Digestion
When I see how many supplements and tests parents are using, I often ask myself: Is this really necessary?
Ayurveda teaches us that healing can be simple—and nature already has the tools we need.
One of the most trusted Ayurvedic remedies for digestion is:
Triphala: The Gentle Bowel Tonic
Triphala is not a laxative. It’s a bowel tonic that supports long-term gut health by:
- Strengthening intestinal muscle tone
- Cleansing the gut without irritation
- Reducing excess mucus buildup
- Improving colon motility naturally
- Nourishing the digestive system as a whole
And the best part? It’s safe for long-term use, even in children.
How to Use Triphala for Children
The dosage depends on your child’s sensitivity and the severity of their constipation.
General Guidelines:
- 250–500 mg per day is a typical dose
- Take once or twice daily, preferably after meals
For Kids Who Can’t Swallow Tablets:
- Triphala Honey Paste
Mix Triphala powder + raw honey into a paste.
Give 1 teaspoon after meals. - Triphala Decoction (Tea)
Brew Triphala in warm water, let it cool to room temperature, and serve.
Safe once or twice daily.
